A Copy Ability Room[1] is a special room, section, or stage devoted specifically to Copy Ability testing; containing most, if not all of the abilities available in the game it appears in from Copy Essences scattered throughout the area. The first of these appeared in Kirby Super Star, and they have reappeared in several Kirby series titles since. These areas almost always require unlocking, either by completing the main game, or performing some other task.

Copy Ability Rooms by game

Kirby Super Star / Kirby Super Star Ultra

Two stages devoted specifically to Copy Ability testing can be found in the Dyna Blade area map. These are unlocked by pressing the Big Switches in Mallow Castle and Candy Mountain.

Each stage contains a different set of Copy Abilities, and a number of enemies to test them on. The areas also have Maxim Tomatoes to restore Kirby's Health.

Kirby & The Amazing Mirror

From the Rainbow Route - Central Circle, a Mirror Door leading to an ability testing chamber will open when all of the Big Switches in the game have been pressed, linking all of the hubs to the central circle. This room contains Copy Essences for every ability in the game, except for Master, Cook, Crash, Mini, Sleep, Magic and UFO.

Kirby: Squeak Squad

From the world map, a special area can be accessed if every piece of the Secret Map has been collected. This area includes Copy Bubbles for every Copy Ability, including Ghost if the Ghost Medal has been completed. The Triple Star can also be found to be collected at the very end of the area after Dark Nebula has been defeated.

Kirby's Return to Dream Land / Kirby's Return to Dream Land Deluxe

Inside the Lor Starcutter, there are four or five chambers in the left wing that are unlocked by collecting Energy Spheres. Each room contains five Copy Essences for different abilities, and a sandbag called Mr. Sandbag to practice on. In the original Wii version, the only abilities that are not represented are limited-use abilities like Crash and Mike, Sleep and the Super Abilities.

The following is a list of what each room contains, and what the unlock requirement is in the Wii version:

The abilities and requirements on Switch are slightly different:

  • Room 1 - Cutter, Leaf, Needle, Fire, Sword - 15 to unlock
  • Room 2 - Sand, Parasol, Whip, Beam, Spark - 35 to unlock
  • Room 3 - Stone, Bomb, Tornado, Hi-Jump, Water - 65 to unlock
  • Room 4 - Spear, Mecha, Wing, Fighter, Ice - 85 to unlock
  • Room 5 - Ninja, Hammer, Crash, Mike, Festival - 105 to unlock

Kirby's Dream Collection

Each level in New Challenge Stages contains an ability testing room which allows Kirby to practice with abilities available on that level. Like the rooms in Return to Dream Land, these are small, and contain a Sandbag to practice on. Unlike those rooms, however, Kirby equips his desired ability at the door, and is unable to discard it while inside.

Kirby: Triple Deluxe

Once the Story Mode is complete, Kirby can access the Ability Testing Room by traveling down the Dreamstalk past the first level; Fine Fields. This area consists of vine walkways and has Copy Essences for every ability in the game except for Hypernova. There is also a small room dedicated to a Toughness Waddle Dee, who Kirby can test his abilities on.

Kirby: Planet Robobot

Once the Story Mode is complete, Kirby can access the Ability Testing Room in the Access Ark area map, by hopping on a Warp Star past the entrance to Stage EX 1. In here is an area which resembles Fine Fields from Kirby: Triple Deluxe, though the walkways are built using steel and pipes. All abilities can be found here, as well as a Toughness Waddle Dee to practice them on. In a separate area of the stage, a suit of Robobot Armor can be found, and all the armor modes can be tested there on a multitude of enemies.

If the save file is cleared 100%, a UFO can also be found in this stage, which will grant the UFO ability when swallowed. This is the only way to get that ability in this game, unless a Kirby series Kirby amiibo is scanned in.

Kirby Battle Royale

A training room is accessible from the main menu, as well as from Dedede's Cake Royale. Once inside, the player can select an ability to use and a style of room to enter, which will place Kirby (or another character) in either a top-down or side-view arena. A Sandbag styled after Kirby can be found in here, along with a few Apples. The sandbag can be attacked, and will not retaliate except to return to its original position after a short while. If the sandbag is defeated, it will reappear shortly afterward.

This testing room takes the form of a 'planet' which is unlocked after the story mode is complete. It can be accessed in Far-Flung Starlight Heroes. In addition to being a hub for every ability (and Friend) in the game, there is also a challenge room on this planet, which - if beaten - will yield a large reward for Kirby, though completing this challenge is not required for 100% completion of the game.

Kirby and the Forgotten Land

Main article: Waddle Dee's Weapons Shop

In Kirby and the Forgotten Land, the ability testing area takes the form of Waddle Dee's Weapons Shop, which can be found in Waddle Dee Town after completing Natural Plains. The shop serves not only as a place for Kirby to equip and try out abilities he has already found, but is also where he can evolve them and power them up, by finding blueprints and spending Star Coins and Rare Stones.

Kirby's Dream Buffet

Main article: Free Rolling

Though not formally a Copy Ability Room, the Free Rolling stage in Kirby's Dream Buffet contains Copy Food for all eight abilities in the game, which replenish when Kirby picks them up, allowing him to freely test any ability. There are also several areas that specifically encourage certain types of ability testing, such as the Tornado Copy Food in the Baumkuchen halfpipe.
