Coo is one of Kirby's three original Animal Friends, being introduced in Kirby's Dream Land 2. Coo is a purple owl with a white chest, although some of his sprites and artwork depict him with gray instead of purple as his primary colour.
<onlyinclude>{{#ifeq:{}|lead|
Coo is a large owl-like creature and one of Kirby's six Animal Friends, making his first appearance in Kirby's Dream Land 2. He is distinguished by his frilly purple and white plumage, his piercing eyes, and his sharp talons, which he uses to keep a grip on Kirby as they travel together. Pairing up Coo with Kirby allows for a number of different methods of attack based on what Copy Ability the pink puffball has, though these vary heavily in effectiveness.
}}</onlyinclude>

Coo makes his most prominent appearances in Kirby's Dream Land 2, Kirby's Dream Land 3, and Kirby Star Allies, where he is a playable character (though always paired up with either Kirby, Gooey, or another Animal Friend). He has appeared in a large number of other games as well, though he rarely makes more than a cameo appearance, and is seldom seen in isolation from Rick and Kine. Coo also has a supporting role in the anime series Kirby: Right Back at Ya!, where he has the ability to speak in full sentences and is seen as the wisest of Dream Land's intelligent animals.

Characteristics
Coo takes on the appearance of a round owl with thick plumage that frills outward, giving him a spiky "hair"-style. His feathers take on a largely purple and white hue (gray and white in Kirby's Dream Land 3) with black accents around the eyes and tips of the wings. His talons and beak are yellow, with two front toes on the former which he uses to keep hold of Kirby as the two fly together. As expected for a bird, Coo's specialty is his speedy flight and maneuverability in the air, being able to overpower strong gales of wind. With sufficient effort, he can also battle currents underwater, though Kine is naturally preferable for this task and Coo's high profile makes him a rather large target. Coo is portrayed as somewhat reserved when compared to the other Animal Friends, and usually only interacts directly with Kirby. Kirby's Dream Land 3 shows that, unlike the other five Animal Friends, Coo does not have any other known friends or relatives.

When Kirby is traveling with Coo, the large owl holds the hero in his talons and carries him around, allowing him to fly faster than he normally could and fall much slower. Additionally, Kirby can inhale and fly at the same time, although he still has to be on the ground in order to swallow an enemy. Coo is also strong enough to fly against wind currents, making it possible to reach areas that would otherwise be inaccessible. Coo is easily the quickest of the Animal Friends, only being outmatched in the water against Kine.
Like the other Animal Friends, Coo is always angling to get Kirby to travel with him, and can be seen pouting when Kirby picks someone else as a companion. Despite his cool demeanor, Coo can be somewhat of a klutz, as evidenced in his opening scene in Big Forest and in some of the time-out scenes from Round Clear in Kirby's Star Stacker for Game Boy.

Game Appearances
Kirby's Dream Land 2
Kirby's Dream Land 2
Coo debuted along with Rick and Kine in this title. He can be found in certain bags after defeating the mini-boss on guard. From there, Kirby can mount him and they can travel together. Coo is extremely quick in the air, and can fly against strong breezes. He also utilizes Kirby's currently-equipped Copy Ability to perform various combo attacks.

Coo makes his first appearance in Kirby's Dream Land 2 as one of Kirby's three Animal Friends. He is first encountered in the first stage of Big Forest, where a Scarfy is guarding him. Apart from appearing in a number of stages, the owl is also seen in four level intros: in the Big Forest intro, he tries and fails to grab an apple with Kirby; in Red Canyon, he is disturbed from his perch when Kirby and Rick roll into his cliffside; in Cloudy Park, he pulls Kirby out of a cloud with difficulty only to realize that Kine was also stuck to him; and finally, in Dark Castle, he flies off with Kirby and the others after spotting the castle.

When teamed up with Coo, Kirby hangs from the owl's talons beneath him. Together, the two can fly extremely quickly and deftly through the air, making Coo ideal for speedruns. Even in the water, Coo can still travel with respectable speed, though naturally he cannot outpace Kine in this environment. Coo has no means of locomotion on the land, though this is seldom an issue. Coo's only real disadvantage is his large profile when paired with Kirby, making the two easier targets for enemies and their projectiles.

Like other Animal Friends, Coo will enhance any Copy Ability that Kirby possesses while the two are traveling together, turning it into a new, unique power.

Kirby's Star Stacker
Kirby's Star Stacker
In Kirby's Star Stacker, Coo, along with Kine and Rick, aids Kirby by eliminating any star blocks and devaluing hard blocks to star blocks between pairs of tiles.

Coo returns in Kirby's Star Stacker for Game Boy, alongside the other two friends (Rick and Kine) from the previous game. Just like the other animals, he appears as one of the three types of Friend Blocks essential for destroying the various other kinds of blocks. As such, it acts identically to the other two Friend Blocks but requires other Coo blocks for a reaction to take place.

Apart from being an integral gameplay element, the owl is also seen in the various "time out" cutscenes between rounds, where he can be seen flying and battling wind currents or carrying things, as well as in three of the pictures unlocked by completing certain modes. Finishing "Very Hard!" mode shows him carrying a basket containing Kirby and Rick, and he is seen together with the other Animal Friends in the pictures awarded for completing Super Hard and Insane!.

Coo also shows up in the Super Famicom remake of Kirby's Star Stacker, where he appears in the story mode cutscenes and has the same role as a Friend Block in gameplay.

Coo returns as a friend for Kirby to team up with in Kirby's Dream Land 3, alongside the other Animal Friends from the game's predecessor. His appearance has remained largely the same, though he plays a little differently. If the player mashes the A button, Coo can fly even faster than before, even being able to beat water currents like Kine, but doing so comes at a risk, as many more enemies fill the air than before, and Coo and Kirby now share life.

Coo returns as a friend for Kirby to team up with in Kirby's Dream Land 3, alongside the other Animal Friends from the game's predecessor. His appearance has remained largely the same, though his purple feathers are now gray and he plays a bit differently. Just like other Animal Friends, Coo once again grants Kirby access to different skills if the pink hero possesses a Copy Ability, although a few of these combinations differ slightly from those of the previous game.

Although Coo does not appear in person in The Crystal Shards, he makes a cameo as one of the statues Kirby can turn into by using the Stone-Cutter Power Combo. As the Coo sculpture, Kirby can fly slowly through the air, though he cannot move while on the ground. As with the other results of Stone-Cutter, Kirby is invincible in this form and may end the transformation at any time by pushing the ability button again, causing the statue to crumble and harm nearby enemies with its debris.

In Kirby Super Star Ultra, Coo, alongside the other friends from Kirby's Dream Land 2, appears as a statue once more, this time being one of the possible results of using the Stone ability. The Coo sculpture is completely immobile and behaves identically to all other Stone forms, differing from them only in looks.

Coo also cameos in the sub-game Kirby Card Swipe alongside the other Animal Friends.

Coo once more cameos as a Stone transformation in Kirby's Return to Dream Land. Instead of receiving his own separate statue, however, he is part of a sculpture consisting of all three of Kirby's original Animal Friends (Coo, Rick, and Kine). As usual, this result only differs from other Stone forms in appearance and size.

In Kirby's Return to Dream Land Deluxe, the Animal Friends statue from the original is replaced by the one from Kirby Star Allies, depicting Coo, Rick, and Kine in a Protective Bag. There are also two Dress-Up Masks based on Coo, with one based on his current purple design that is unlocked upon completing Stamp Rally card #02 in Merry Magoland and another based on his gray coloration from Kirby's Dream Land 3 that is unlocked after completing 10 missions. Additionally, completing 10 missions causes a gold statue of Coo, Rick, and Kine to appear in Merry Magoland, which seems to reuse the same pose of the original Animal Friends Stone transformation from Kirby's Return to Dream Land.

Coo also makes a brief appearance in an image shown near the end of the staff credits in Magolor Epilogue: The Interdimensional Traveler, in which he can be seen perched on Magolor's Shoppe in the Dream Kingdom.

Kirby's Dream Collection Special Edition
In Kirby's Dream Collection Special Edition, Coo makes a number of appearances: naturally this includes his roles in the games featured in the collection, but he also appears in places in the Kirby's History hallway, and has a few appearances in the Kirby's 20th Anniversary Celebration Book as well.

Kirby: Triple Deluxe
Kirby: Triple Deluxe
Coo appears along with Rick and Kine in Kirby Fighters (and Kirby Fighters Deluxe) in the forest stage. He occasionally emerges from one of the tree trunks, and can toss feathers out to serve as a hazard to the combatants.
Coo appears as a stage hazard on the Coo's Forest stage of the Kirby Fighters sub-game in Kirby: Triple Deluxe. In this appearance, Coo flies out of one of the doorways and throws one or more sets of Cutter feathers which deal 32 damage to fighters. Colliding with Coo does 16 damage to the fighters like with other Animal Friends that appear on the stage.

Coo also appears in two keychains. The first depicts him with Kirby in Kirby's Dream Land 2, and the other shows him and Kirby performing the combination Needle attack in Kirby's Dream Land 3.

Lastly, the Stone sculpture featuring Coo from Kirby's Return to Dream Land returns in this game.

Coo appears as a Dream Friend in Kirby Star Allies, being tied with Rick and Kine into a single playable character. Coo takes the lead whenever any amount of flying needs to be done, and comes equipped with his "Parasol" and "Cutter" combination attacks from Kirby's Dream Land 2. The Cutter feathers can be used to slice foliage and ropes, and both attacks can imbue allies with the Bluster Power Effect.

Coo also appears in two of the Celebration Pictures, namely "A Dream Above the Clouds" and "Crazy Mischief in the Stars".

Lastly, Coo appears alongside Rick and Kine in one of Kirby or Rocky's Stone transformations, contained inside a Protective Bag. This particular form is always the result when Rock Painter is used on Rick & Kine & Coo.

Coo is a minor recurring character in the anime series Kirby: Right Back at Ya!. Here, he is portrayed as an intelligent native animal of Dream Land who is capable of conversing with the residents of Cappy Town. He does not have a deep relationship with Kirby, but he does care about the pink Star Warrior. In the Japanese version, Coo is mentioned as being "highly respected", even by Tokkori.
Coo makes his home in the Eastern Forest, living with several other animals in the ancient tree Acore. Unlike the other two Animal Friends in the anime series, Coo never has a prominent role in any episode. Coo is voiced by a male voice actor in the English dub, but a female voice actress in the original Japanese version.

In the Kirby novel series, Coo appears as a deuteragonist in Kirby: Save the Rainbow Islands! together with Rick and Kine. He is a resident of the Rainbow Islands and one of Kirby's Animal Friends.
In Kirby: Save the Rainbow Islands!, he comes to Dream Land with Rick and Kine to ask Kirby to help find the cause of the drought on the Rainbow Islands. In their search, Coo notices Pirika falling from the sky, who indicates at an intruder in the clouds as the culprit. Coo joins too to the search at the cloud, but tells that he cannot carry everyone while flying, so they use Meta Knight's boat instead.
At the lake, they find their friend Gooey, who dammed up the lake. Gooey attacks Pirika, so they retreat to regroup. After Kine, Kirby and Rick fail to enter the water to investigate for the potential mastermind, Pirika insists that Coo should check the water. This makes Coo suspicious of her, as she wanted somebody to jump into the lake the whole time. When she shakes off the option of her entering due to her inability to swim, Coo flies over to Kirby and pecks him back to consciousness. As Kirby uses is inhale, Coo protects Pirika from getting sucked in. After Gooey spews out the fruit and explains that he was preventing them from entering the water due to its dangers, Coo realizes that Pirika is the culprit and begins chasing her. When Pirika throws King Dedede and Meta Knight into the lake, Coo prevents Kirby from jumping in to save them, since he realizes that the lake is not what it seems. He wakes up the knocked-out Kine and Rick and saves Kirby from King Dedede's and Meta Knight's attack. They all fight against their controlled friends, subduing them and Pirika in the pouch from Pick.
As they catch a break, Coo and the others listen to Gooey telling his side of the story. Coo realizes that Gooey had emerged from the lake but was unaffected by it, which baffles the group. Eventually King Dedede and Meta Knight break out of the pouch, so the Animal Friends continue the battle. However, it is cut short after Kirby inhales all the lake water. They find Kirby in great pain, but he recovers almost immediately. They then confront Pirika and have her explain her motives. Kirby, sympathetic after her story, offers to become her friend, and the rest follow queue. Her spell is broken, and the group heads back to the Rainbow Islands to celebrate the return of the rain.

Coo's Theme in Kirby's Dream Land 2

 This box: view  talk  edit
In the air, it's Coo to the rescue. Storms and strong winds are a piece of cake! Coo can fly like an eagle.
— Kirby's Dream Land 3 instruction booklet

Coo is a large owl-like creature and one of Kirby's six Animal Friends, making his first appearance in Kirby's Dream Land 2. He is distinguished by his frilly purple and white plumage, his piercing eyes, and his sharp talons, which he uses to keep a grip on Kirby as they travel together. Pairing up Coo with Kirby allows for a number of different methods of attack based on what Copy Ability the pink puffball has, though these vary heavily in effectiveness.

Characteristics[edit]

Kirby's Dream Land 2[edit]

KDL2 Coo and Kirby artwork.png

KDL2 Coo sprite.png
In-game sprite.

Kirby's Star Stacker[edit]

Coo features prominently in the Very Hard! ending illustration in Round Clear mode in Kirby's Star Stacker.

Kirby's Dream Land 3[edit]

Coo's artwork from Kirby's Dream Land 3.

Coo returns as a friend for Kirby to team up with in Kirby's Dream Land 3, alongside the other Animal Friends from the game's predecessor. His appearance has remained largely the same, though his purple feathers are now gray and he plays a bit differently. If the player mashes the B button, Coo can fly even faster than before, even being able to beat water currents like Kine, but doing so comes at a risk, as many more enemies fill the air than before, and Coo and Kirby now share life.

Just like other Animal Friends, Coo once again grants Kirby access to different skills if the pink hero possesses a Copy Ability, although a few of these combinations differ slightly from those of the previous game.

Kirby 64: The Crystal Shards[edit]

Kirby using Stone-Cutter to transform into a statue of Coo.

Although Coo does not appear in person in Kirby 64: The Crystal Shards, he makes a cameo as one of the statues Kirby can turn into by using the Stone-Cutter Power Combo.

Kirby: Canvas Curse[edit]

In Kirby: Canvas Curse, one of the images that the player can connect the dots to draw in the Paint Panic boss game depicts Coo.

Kirby Super Star Ultra[edit]

KSSU Stone Coo sprite.png
Coo statue sprite.

Kirby Mass Attack[edit]

In Kirby Mass Attack, Coo appears in the sub-game Kirby Quest, where he appears alongside Rick and Kine in the "game over" screen.

Kirby's Return to Dream Land / Kirby's Return to Dream Land Deluxe[edit]

The sculpture from Kirby's Return to Dream Land that depicts Coo along with Rick and Kine.

Kirby's Dream Collection Special Edition[edit]

In Kirby's Dream Collection Special Edition, Coo makes a number of appearances: naturally this includes his roles in the games featured in the collection, but he also appears in places in the Kirby's History hallway, and has a few appearances in the Kirby's 20th Anniversary Celebration Book as well.

Kirby: Triple Deluxe[edit]

Kirby Fighters Deluxe / Kirby Fighters 2[edit]

As with the original Sub-Game, Coo cameos in Kirby Fighters Deluxe and Kirby Fighters 2, serving as a stage hazard in Coo's Forest.

— Unofficial translation of Coo's description from Kirby: Save the Rainbow Islands!
