— Kirby: Planet Robobot Pause Screen description

Clanky Woods is a Boss that made its debut in Kirby: Planet Robobot, appearing as the boss of Patched Plains. It is Whispy Woods, mechanized by the Haltmann Works Company, and able to move freely about. It also boasts a cannon in its mouth, which it uses to fire missiles.

Game Appearances

Kirby: Planet Robobot

In its debut appearance, Clanky Woods is encountered three times during the story. Its first appearance is toward the end of Stage 1 of Patched Plains. After Kirby enters the area, a bunch of fleeing Waddle Dees pass him by. From there, Clanky enters the scene using its four drill legs, roars upon noticing Kirby, and starts to chase him down. During this phase, Clanky can be attacked and defeated, but it is only necessary to escape it by continuing to the left. Defeating Clanky here however, will reward Kirby with the stage's rare sticker.

Boss Fight

The second time it is encountered is in the Boss stage itself. It first appears on a platform resembling half a ring, roars at Kirby, as it is ought to do, then the fight begins.

The following lists all of Clanky's attacks in Kirby: Planet Robobot. Attacks in italics are only used by Clanky Woods 2.0.

Clanky uses a Drill Drop in Phase 1 of the fight.

Clanky Woods attacks in a fixed order on loop in Story Mode and The Arena as follows:

Attacks - Phase 1
Attack Description
Missiles
Clanky shoots two missiles out if its mouth cannon, which weakly home in on Kirby. These can be inhaled for the Bomb ability or spat back.
Drill Attack
Clanky drills into the ground with its front legs, causing boulders to fly out of the ground. These can be inhaled for the Stone ability or spat back.
Canopy Barrage
Clanky jumps into the air, then hangs up-side down above Kirby, shaking its canopy until pieces fall off to hit him. These pieces explode, but can be disabled by destroying or inhaling them.
Slam
When returning to the stage, Clanky can hurt Kirby by falling on top of him.
Drill Slam
Clanky hops into the air, then lands with legs extended onto the ground, drilling that spot, causing inhalable boulders to fling out on both sides.

In Meta Knightmare Returns and The True Arena, Clanky Woods 2.0 always starts with these attacks:

  • Slam
  • Missiles
  • Canopy Barrage
  • Slam
  • Drill Attack
  • Drill Slam

Afterwards, he attacks in a fixed order on loop as follows:

  • Missiles
  • Canopy Barrage
  • Slam
  • Missiles
  • Drill Slam
  • Drill Attack
  • Canopy Barrage
  • Slam
  • Drill Attack
  • Drill Slam

When Clanky is knocked down to half of its stamina, it falls off the stage. Then the platform is extended to include an extra semi-circle ring half to make the full ring. Clanky then emerges from a large screw platform in the middle, jumps on the back-side of the ring and roars again. The fight then continues, with Kirby and Clanky battling around the ring, as opposed to the static area earlier.

Clanky attempts a Dash Charge in Phase 2 of the fight.

In Story Mode and The Arena, Clanky Woods attacks in a fixed order on loop as follows:

Attacks - Phase 2
Attack Description
Dash Charge
Clanky halts, then begins dashing around the ring very quickly, leaving three stars behind it as it does so. Covers nearly a full lap of the ring, and moreso for Clanky 2.0.
Drill Attack
Clanky drills into the ground with its front legs, causing boulders to fly out of the ground. These can be inhaled and spat back.
Missiles
Clanky shoots two missiles out if its mouth cannon, which weakly home in on Kirby. These can be inhaled and spat back.

Clanky Woods 2.0 in Meta Knightmare Returns and The True Arena always starts with these attacks:

  • Dash Charge
  • Two groups of two Missiles
  • Jumping attack
  • Eight missiles rapid-fire
  • Dash Charge
  • Two group of two Missiles
  • Jumping attack
  • Drill Slam

Afterwards, he attacks in a fixed order on loop as follows:

  • Dash Charge
  • Two groups of two Missiles
  • Jumping attack
  • Two groups of two Missiles

When Clanky's stamina is nearly depleted, it causes all the sections of the ring that Kirby is not standing on to rise up, forming walls and trapping Kirby in a narrow space. Clanky then occupies the central area, where it cannot be directly hit, much like HR-D3's first phase in Kirby's Return to Dream Land. It can still be hit when performing certain attacks, however.

Drills enter Kirby's space while Clanky sits in the background in Phase 3 of the fight.
Attacks - Phase 3
Attack Description
Drill Cannons
Clanky jumps, then drill bits fire out of the tubes on the walls. These fly across the screen in a horizontal lines, then explode when they hit the other side. They can be swallowed for the Bomb ability.
Canopy Barrage
Clanky shakes about, causing pieces of its canopy to fall off and bounce into Kirby's space, then bounce off-screen. If Kirby hits these pieces hard enough, they will bounce back and hit Clanky instead.
Drill Poke
Clanky jumps into Kirby's space, occupying the upper portion. There, it uses its drills to attempt to prod Kirby. Its last attack leaves its drill stuck in the ground for a moment, creating two stars and leaving it open to retaliation.
Missiles
Clanky fires four inhalable missiles, two on each side, that home in on Kirby.
Drill Attack
Clanky 2.0 drills into the ground with its front legs, causing boulders to fly out of the ground, then jumps and performs another in a different location. These can be inhaled and spat back.

In Story Mode and The Arena, Clanky Woods attacks in a fixed order on loop as follows:

  • Drill Cannons
  • Canopy Barrage
  • Drill Poke

  • Drill Attack
  • Drill Cannons
  • Missiles
  • Drill Poke
  • Drill Cannons
  • Canopy Barrage

Once Clanky is defeated, it is ruptured by small internal explosions, and rendered inoperable. Unable to move, it sits in the middle of the arena and cries tears of oil as Kirby does his dance and finishes the level.

After the boss fight, Clanky is encountered one more time in Access Ark, Stage 8-EX. Here, Kirby can use the Robobot Armor to defeat it during another chase-down sequence.
