"C-R-O-W-N-E-D" (also parsed "CROWNED") is a musical piece composed by Hirokazu Ando,[1] which serves as the battle theme of Magolor's second form and Magolor Soul in Kirby's Return to Dream Land and its remake.

CompositionEdit

Magolor's appearance after being crowned.

"C-R-O-W-N-E-D" is a dramatic orchestral track in F minor and 4/4. It is primarily based on "Magolor, the Far-Flung Traveler" while completely lacking in the latter's cheeriness. The intro starts slowly as the corresponding cutscene portrays the Master Crown; this intro is a slowed down version of the second section of "Magolor, the Far-Flung Traveler", played by cellos with supporting strings and choir. The choir leads to the main section, where the tempo increases to a frantic rate. The ostinato accompaniment presents the main motif of the track, which soon kicks in properly with the strings. This melody is structurally identical to the main melody of "Magolor, the Far-Flung Traveler", albeit in straight rhythm and inverted. In a call and response, the strings lead the melody as other instruments second it. As it comes to a resolution, a counterpoint quoting "The Adventure Begins" keeps up the pace. The melody is repeated by a flute in A-flat (G-sharp) minor; rather than a repetition in the response, said response now features the motif of "Road to Victory". This ends in a similar fashion to the first iteration.

Heroic and somewhat lyrical in character, "Four Adventurers: Cookie Country" takes the lead, at first uninterrupted by "C-R-O-W-N-E-D"'s own motifs. However, the melody of the latter returns as a counterpoint. A climactic brass minor iteration of the melody of "Magolor, the Far-Flung Traveler" sounds, at first stably in A-flat minor, but then becoming tonally unstable with diminished harmonies. Continuing in this instability, "Road to Victory" joins in for its resolution in E minor.

From the newly established key, the theme repeats its structure through the "Four Adventurers: Cookie Country" segment. The motif of "Magolor, the Far-Flung Traveler" comes in early as a quiet counterpart, making space for another familiar motif. Now in C minor, a resolute brass version of the rising phrase of "Green Greens" plays. This is followed by a clarinet's quote of its sister theme, "Kirby's Triumphant Return". This theme plays again with a tutti. Bells join in its resolution, and the phrase imitates the conclusion of "Road to Victory". The choir joins again with quiet string support, bridging back to F minor for the track to loop.

Game appearancesEdit

Kirby's Return to Dream Land / Kirby's Return to Dream Land DeluxeEdit

In Kirby's Return to Dream Land, the original version of "C-R-O-W-N-E-D" is used in the boss battle with Magolor's second form in Story Mode and The Arena and Magolor Soul in Extra Mode and The True Arena. It can be found as Track 105 in the game's Jukebox.

In Kirby's Return to Dream Land Deluxe, "C-R-O-W-N-E-D" also sees use during the battles with Magolor's second form in Story Mode and The Arena, along with Magolor Soul in Extra Mode (Track 127 in the Jukebox). This arrangement has discernible changes in sound mixing compared to the Wii version's track. In addition, a partial arrangement titled "INTERNAL STRUGGLE" plays in the rest area preceding Magolor Soul's battle in The True Arena (Track 196 in the Jukebox), with the Kirby Star Allies arrangement "Supreme Ruler's Coronation - OVERLORD" used during the actual fight. While at first the song is identical to the Kirby Star Allies version, during the battle's second phase, an added choir plus what sounds like Magolor's cries for help get mixed into the track. A variation of the theme that fades the second phase version in after one complete loop can be listened to in the Jukebox as Track 197.

Five additional partial or full arrangements of "C-R-O-W-N-E-D" appear in Kirby's Return to Dream Land Deluxe:

  • The title screen theme for Magolor Epilogue: The Interdimensional Traveler, "Judgment of the Malus Pumila", incorporates elements of "C-R-O-W-N-E-D". It can be found as track 169 in the Jukebox.
  • Magolor Epilogue's final boss battle music, "Mistilteinn, Tree Crown without a Ruler", is a medley incorporating "C-R-O-W-N-E-D". It can be found as track 184 in the Jukebox.
  • Magolor Epilogue's staff credits theme, "Crossing into the Parallel with You", features an arrangement of "C-R-O-W-N-E-D" as part of another medley. It can be found as track 186 in the Jukebox.
  • Magolor Epilogue's Extra Stage features the first version of "C-R-O-W-N-E-D" from Dedede's Drum Dash Deluxe. It can be found as track 188 in the Jukebox.
  • A jingle called "Deluxe Master!" plays upon clearing Merry Magoland, Magolor Epilogue, or The True Arena. This is an arrangement of the late first portion of "C-R-O-W-N-E-D", which itself is an arrangement of "Magolor, the Far-Flung Traveler". It can be found as track 199 in the Jukebox.

Dedede's Drum Dash DeluxeEdit

In the Sub-Game standalone spin-off Dedede's Drum Dash Deluxe, "C-R-O-W-N-E-D" is remixed twice to serve as the Bonus Level music.

  • The first remix is simply titled "C-R-O-W-N-E-D" on normal difficulty, featuring melodica. This remix is a truncated version of the song.
  • The second remix is titled "C-R-O-W-N-E-D (Reprise)" ("CROWNED: Ver.2" in the Japanese and Korean versions and in the English versions of some later games) on secret difficulty, featuring electronic instrumentation as well as the song being extended to its original length.

Kirby and the Rainbow CurseEdit

A remix of "C-R-O-W-N-E-D" can be unlocked in Kirby and the Rainbow Curse by collecting one of the Treasure Chests found in the Wonder Space stage, to then be played in the game's Music Room. It features a predominant electric guitar and electronic instruments.

Kirby: Planet RobobotEdit

In Kirby: Planet Robobot, "C-R-O-W-N-E-D (Reprise)" (titled "CROWNED: Ver.2" on the official soundtrack) from Dedede's Drum Dash Deluxe is reused in Access Ark - Stage 8 EX.

Kirby Star AlliesEdit

During Morpho Knight's boss battle in Guest Star ???? Star Allies Go! and Soul Melter (EX) of The Ultimate Choice, if player 1 is Magolor, Morpho Knight's theme will be replaced by a medley of multiple themes from Kirby's Return to Dream Land related to Magolor, and "C-R-O-W-N-E-D" is among them. The track title on Kirby Star Allies: The Original Soundtrack is 覇王戴冠 ~OVERLORD~ (Supreme Ruler’s Coronation ~OVERLORD~) which is translated as "Supreme Ruler's Coronation - OVERLORD" in Kirby's Return to Dream Land Deluxe.

This medley is also arranged by Hirokazu Ando. It can be found as Track 181 in the Kirby Star Allies Jukebox.

Super Smash Bros. UltimateEdit

Both the original version of "C-R-O-W-N-E-D" (here titled "CROWNED") from Kirby's Return to Dream Land and "C-R-O-W-N-E-D (Reprise)" (here titled "CROWNED: Ver.2") from Dedede's Drum Dash Deluxe are playable music tracks in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate.

Other appearancesEdit

In the Kirby Wii Music Selection CD, the bonus track ボーナストラック:サイゴノタタカイ (Bonus Track: Last Battle) is a medley of themes related to the final battle against Magolor, and "C-R-O-W-N-E-D" is featured at the end of it.

The original version of the theme is included as Track 41 in the Kirby's Dream Collection Special Edition Compilation Soundtrack.

In The Sound of Kirby Café, 王様と魔女のランデヴー/カービィシリーズ番外編メドレー (Rendezvous of the King and the Witches / Kirby Series Extra Game Medley) features "C-R-O-W-N-E-D (Reprise)" from Dedede's Drum Dash Deluxe at its beginning.

In the Kirby 25th Anniversary Orchestra Concert, "C-R-O-W-N-E-D" is featured in the "Kirby's Return to Dream Land Medley".

The theme was performed live at the Kirby 30th Anniversary Music Festival as part of the "Kirby Finale Battle Fest" medley, along with "Final Boss" from Kirby's Adventure, "Vs. Marx", "0² Battle", "Fatal Blooms in Moonlight", and "Vagrant Counting Song of Retrospection".

The "Deluxe Master!" jingle from Kirby's Return to Dream Land Deluxe plays as the jingle for coming in 1st place on the Kirby's Return to Dream Land Deluxe theme in Tetris 99.

EtymologyEdit

The title "C-R-O-W-N-E-D" consists of the seven first letters of the levels in Kirby's Return to Dream Land, indicating how Magolor has crowned himself with the Master Crown:
