Blocky[1] is a creature that made a few appearances throughout the Kirby series. It has a grey, dense body of stone that is shaped like a cube with two round eyes and a simple mouth. Two cuboids made of the same material are located below the cubic body and serve as the creature's feet. It appears to be very heavy, a fact which is reflected by its main method of attack: Trying to crush Kirby with its body mass. Defeating and inhaling it yields the Stone ability for Kirby. Blocky usually appears as a Mid Boss, or inherits another function that consists of opposing Kirby. So far it's made appearances in Kirby's Dream Land 2, Kirby's Dream Land 3, and in the Kirby anime Kirby: Right Back at Ya!. It follows a similar concept as Rocky, which is also a creature made of stone, albeit Rocky more resembles a natural rock.

Game Appearances

Kirby's Dream Land 3

Blocky appears in Kirby's Dream Land 3 as one of six Mid Bosses in total. It must be fought in certain levels throughout the game, and then a last time alongside all the other Mid Bosses in the sixth stage of the Iceberg. In battle, Blocky tries to rush into Kirby, crushing him into the wall, or it jumps around and attempts to flatten Kirby underneath it. The heavy impact of Blocky's attack create Stars which Kirby can inhale and use as projectile weapons against the Mid Boss. After Blocky is defeated, Kirby can inhale it to obtain the Stone ability. Blocky also appears in the enemy parade during one of the game's endings.

Kirby Mass Attack

Block reappears in "Kirby's Mass Attack" in the mini-game Kirby Brawl Ball. It is found in the Lololo & Lalala mini-boss battle. Blocky walks around, trying to block Kirby from hitting Lololo & Lalala. It may also occasionally ground pound to try and attack Kirby. if successful, it could make Kirby drop down the hole back into the main pinball part.

Appearance in Kirby: Right Back at Ya!

Blocky's appearance in the anime.

Blocky also makes an appearance in Kirby: Right Back at Ya!, where he is one of the Demon Beasts created by Nightmare and Nightmare Enterprises. He appears to be a great sumo champion which is also reflected by his style of appearance and his overall Template:Behavior. Blocky comes in a few different forms. His initial form which he assumes before and after battles is that of a tiny grey brick. Whenever Blocky is commanded to fight, he reveals his true form by growing to a much greater size, developing two big arms and feet with thin black limbs, donning a purple mawashi and something that resembles a chonmage, as well as adopting two eyes with a menacing expression. When fighting he tries to flatten his opponent with his massive weight. Blocky is referred to as "super-dense" which makes him resistent to be inhaled in normal ways. When threatened, Blocky can also split himself into four smaller versions of himself. The smaller versions lack most of the features of the original form, like the arms or the belt, which also makes them more similar to the Blocky from the games. They fight in a manner similar to the original Blocky, and they can even regenerate themselves after they have been smashed. Blocky can re-assume his original form if the separate parts merge together again. Like in the game, managing to inhale Blocky or one of his fragments provides the Stone ability.

Blocky's tiny initial form.

Blocky appears in "A Blockbuster Battle", the second episode of Kirby:Right Back at Ya!. The plot of this episode revolves around Tiff, Tuff, and the denizens of Cappy Town finding a place to live for the homeless Kirby, and eventually building him a house. King Dedede, enraged by this, tries to put a stop to their ambitions because he does not want Kirby to settle down in his realm. After his previous schemes only temporarily rendered Kirby homeless, he purchases Blocky from Customer Service. Initially disappointed at the sight of Blocky's tiny brick form, he quickly gains confidence in him when Blocky uses his weight to crash through multiple stories of King Dedede's Castle. King Dedede then brings Blocky to Kirby and the others, thereby disrupting their housewarming party. Kirby is then forced to fight a duel with Blocky, which he seems to lose at first, since he is unable to inhale his enemy. After getting advice from Meta Knight and doing some inhale-training (while being in the midst of the battle), Kirby is able to make Blocky tremble by using his suction attack from the bottom of a cliff, thereby utilizing gravity to pull Blocky in. However, before he can be inhaled, Blocky splits into four and Kirby only inhales one part of him, which gives him the Stone ability. This turns the odds of the battle to his favor, but he is still not able to permanently defeat Blocky, since he can regenerate from being shattered with ease. Kirby then uses a ploy, leading Blocky to a ledge and causing him to break it. Blocky is then last seen falling into the ocean and sinking to the ground.
