Beware: Whispy Woods! is the fifth episode of the Kirby: Right Back at Ya! series. In this episode, Kirby goes wandering into Whispy Woods Forest after following an apple trail lain by King Dedede to trap him. After getting lost in the woods, Kirby and his friends are attacked by Whispy Woods, who was tricked by Dedede into using his strength on them instead of him, allowing the King to cut down the defenseless Whispy Woods and his forest to build a country club. Just as all hope seems lost, Kirby manages to cough up an apple from Whispy Woods, which regrows the tree, allowing him to jettison King Dedede and restore the forest.

This episode marks the debut of Whispy Woods, and Samo (in the 4Kids version), and is the first episode to not feature a monster from Night Mare Enterprises or a Copy Ability from Kirby.

Plot synopsis

Kirby, Tiff, Tuff, and Tokkori get lost in Whispy Woods Forest.

The episode begins at Castle Dedede. King Dedede is attempting to order another monster from Night Mare Enterprises, but he is told that he may not, due to an outstanding debt in the millions. Frustrated, the King then dismisses N.M.E., saying he has his own plan to stop Kirby using a botanical encyclopedia. Meanwhile, out in the countryside, Tiff has taken Tuff and Kirby out on a field trip to study the wildlife. While reading from her textbook, she did not notice that Kirby had wandered off, and the two set out to find where he has gone. Tiff attempts to put her textbook away, when she finds Tokkori napping in her knapsack. After some cajoling remarks from the cranky bird, the team set off to find Kirby.

Meanwhile, the pink puffball is in a different section of the countryside, looking around. He finds an Apple on the ground, and rushes to eat it. He then finds more apples in a line and follows it, eating each one. Rick spots him and finds the others to show them, who go chasing after Kirby into the woods against Rick's advise. Rick then passes by Melman who tells him he'd just finished a delivery from King Dedede. After losing Kirby yet again in the forest, Tiff, Tuff, and Tokkori decide to pack it up and return home, but soon find they can't tell where they came in from and realize they are lost in Whispy Woods Forest, and Tokkori tries to find a way out from above. Back at the castle, Lady Like grows concerned about Tiff and Tuff's absence, and suspects that King Dedede might be responsible. Dedede and Escargoon then enter the quarters and hint not so subtly that the kids are now lost in the woods.

King Dedede and Escargoon log down Whispy Woods Forest to build their country club.

Back in the woods, Tiff and Tuff grow concerned about Tokkori's long absence, when they are startled by Kirby emerging from the bushes. After a reconciliation, Tokkori returns to relay that he was unable to find his way back, but tries to spin it to make him look brave, which Tiff does not buy for a minute. They decide to camp for the night and try again in the morning. They set up a fire, which prompts Whispy Woods to awaken in anger and trap the campers in a circle of roots. Whispy then appears before them and insists they came here to destroy him based on a letter he received. Tiff tries to calm Whispy down, but Tokkori threatens him with the fire, prompting Whispy to rain apples down on them until they are buried in a massive pile.

King Dedede and Escargoon are punished by being stranded in Whispy Woods Forest.

At that moment, King Dedede and Escargoon drive into the woods in their Armored Vehicle. After Dedede gloats over his plan, Whispy thanks them for warning him about the intruders, and points out that he is now defenseless without his apples, though relieved his enemies were dealt with. At this, King Dedede reveals his treachery by pulling out a laser chainsaw and cutting down the now defenseless Whispy Woods one tree at a time, intent on claiming the cleared land for a development project. As Whispy Woods is felled, Kirby and the gang get thrown aside by his falling trunk, into a clearing where they are confronted by other trees of the forest, demanding that Kirby cough up an apple from Whispy to return him to life. Before the trees can extract the apple from Kirby's mouth, however, he and the kids are picked up and thrown into the Armored Vehicle's container by Dedede as he continues to deforest the area.

By morning, King Dedede has finished cutting down the forest, as the residents of Cappy Town watch on, concerned. Dedede then drives up to them and announces that in place of Whispy Woods, he has built a private country club, which is met with universal disdain from the townsfolk. On queue, Tiff and Tuff arrive with protest signs and are apprehended by the Waddle Dees. Kirby in the meantime is searching inside himself for the right apple while waiting on a golf tee for King Dedede to take a swipe with his hammer. Just in time, Kirby spits the apple out, which rapidly grows into Whispy Woods once more. Whispy takes Dedede's hammer using his roots and swipes the King and Escargoon away, then uses it to spread his apples out and regrow the forest, uprooting the golf course in the process. In the final scene, King Dedede and Escargoon end up lost in Whispy Woods Forest at night, unable to find their way out, while Kirby and his friends enjoy apples atop Whispy Woods' canopy.

Differences between versions

  • In the Japanese version, the scene where King Dedede and Dr. Escargon tease Pamu and Memu about their missing children is longer, with a few more shots.
    • Another scene where Pamu and Memu are talking about the destruction of Whispy Woods Forest is removed from the 4Kids dub.
  • In the Japanese version, Dedede uses a regular metal chainsaw to cut down Whispy Woods Forest, rather than a laser chainsaw.
  • Portions of the D.D.D. Royal Country Club reveal scene were removed in the 4Kids dub.

Dialogue differences

  • In the Japanese version, Rick asks Moso how he managed to find his way out of Whispy Woods Forest, a question which is not brought up in the 4Kids version.
  • In the Japanese version, King Dedede makes a pun during the country club reveal, stating that though Whispy Woods is gone, Tiger Woods is now here, in reference to the name and occupation of the famous golf player.
