Flail this beam like a whip. It has many useful attacks. Try to store up a super shot!
— Super Star Ultra quote

Beam is an ability primarily obtained by absorbing a Beam-using enemy, such as Waddle Doos or Laser Balls, as well as by using Copy Pedestals. It allows Kirby to perform one of several beam attacks, such as a magical beam whip attack, which is useful for hitting switches, Bomb Blocks, and Star Blocks behind solid walls in order to get to hidden areas and items. Typically, Kirby obtains a red and yellow jester hat when this copy ability is obtained.

Game appearances

Kirby's Adventure

Kirby fires a beam like that used by some enemies! This is an easy weapon to use!
— Pause description from Kirby's Adventure

Beam Kirby first appeared in Kirby's Adventure where his Copy Abilities debuted. This ability allows Kirby to swing a beam downwards in his front by pressing the B button. Kirby's sprite doesn't change upon swallowing this ability.

Kirby Super Star and Kirby Super Star Ultra

Beam Kirby appears in Kirby Super Star and Kirby Super Star Ultra, with powers typically expected from Beam Kirby. In the sub-game Milky Way Wishes, Kirby may also obtain and keep the Beam ability by using Copy Essence Deluxes. If Kirby has the Beam ability, he may transform the ability into a Waddle Doo as a helper. Kirby's appearance changes with a jester hat with stars, as well as turning yellow.

Kirby's Return to Dream Land

Beam Kirby reappears in Kirby's Return to Dream Land. In addition to Beam Kirby's typical move-set, Kirby can execute a infinite loop beam whip in mid-air. Because of the multiplayer possibility that there may be several different Template:Coloured Kirbies, there is no yellow shading of Kirby when Kirby obtains the Beam ability. In addition, the jester hat only has the yellow sectioned adorned with stars.

There is a super variant of this ability known as Flare Beam.

Kirby: Planet Robobot

Beam is one of the abilities compatible with the Robobot Armor. Here, it can be used to conduct electricity, similar to Spark, which is also in the game.

Kirby Star Allies

Beam appears as an ability in this title, along with Waddle Doo who represents the ability as a Friend. Beam can be used to augment other abilities with the Zap element.

Super Smash Bros. Trophy Information

Brawl Trophy Description

"Kirby in a jester cap...and a supercute Kirby at that. Beam Kirby features a Beam ability, acquired by inhaling Waddle Doo, that allows him to shoot a whip-like beam at his enemies. With a wide attack range, this ability is extremely easy to use, especially for taking out enemies in bunches. In Kirby Super Star/Kirby's Fun Pak, this beam can also be charged and fired."

Wii U Trophy Description

"Waddle Doo can fire beams from his eye. Does that make you green with envy? Then inhale him and copy that ability! You'll then be able to shoot beams from a wand, and the attack can even be charged up for greater effectiveness. You can also use a beam to push switches or to grab and toss your foes."

Trivia

  • Beam is the very first Copy Ability that can be obtained in the Kirby series, and has appeared in nearly every main series installment since then.
    • In Kirby Star Allies, this is mentioned on the pause menu flavor text of Waddle Doo if he is 1P: "It was the first Copy Ability that anyone ever got, and the origin of all abilities that came later! So much potential from a beam! And now, he wants to see why the beam... bends!"
    • Despite this, the actual first Copy Ability introduced in the game itself is Fire, as seen in the tutorial reel for Kirby's Adventure.
  • In Kirby Fighters Deluxe, the alternative hat for Beam Kirby resembles Marx's.
