Clip of "Art Attack" from Kirby 64: The Crystal Shards

 This box: view  talk  edit
This article is about Adeleine from Kirby 64: The Crystal Shards. For the character from Kirby's Dream Land 3 who might possibly be Adeleine herself, see Ado.
Adeleine, an aspiring young artist, comes to Pop Star to study art but finds herself in the middle of a Dark Matter mess.
— Kirby 64: The Crystal Shards instruction booklet, pg. 22

Adeleine is the young painter that joins forces with Kirby in his quest to rid Dark Matter from his realm in Kirby 64: The Crystal Shards. She is a humanoid girl, which causes her to stand out greatly from many other Kirby series characters, particularly due to the fact that she stands at roughly twice the height of Kirby. Her name is a Germanization of the French "Adeline", which is diminutive for "Adele" (nobility).

Always seen with her easel by her side, she, with her art, regularly bridges the second and third dimensions; her paintings literally morph off of the page, ranging from enemies that Kirby can fight and defeat, to items like 1-Ups and Maxim Tomatoes that Kirby can actually use. In terms of dress, Adeleine most frequently dons a large red beret, green smock, and simple brown shoes, an appearance that changes in color only when playing the mini-games in Kirby 64: The Crystal Shards or recruiting additional Adeleines as Dream Friends in Kirby Star Allies.

Adeleine is not native to Popstar, having come from another world to study art. Her homeworld is left unspecified.

Characteristics

Being a young painter girl, Adeleine is not particularly hardy of constitution, and prefers to avoid fighting whenever possible. In Kirby Star Allies, this is emphasized by the fact that she has the lowest health of any playable character, and her guard has her hiding behind her easel with Ribbon.

Like other characters in Kirby 64: The Crystal Shards, Adeleine does not speak. She seems to be peppy and upbeat from what is seen from her, and always seems to be happy even when times are tough. When Kirby sees her in a stage, she is more than eager to paint some food for him or help him find a Crystal Shard.

Similarities to Ado

Main article: Ado#Relation to Adeleine

It has long been speculated that Adeleine is the same character as Ado from Kirby's Dream Land 3, as both are young painter girls who can make living illustrations. While much has been said regarding the matter, their exact relationship has only been noted in a select few comments from HAL Laboratory, and even then, they tend to not draw any hard conclusions either way.

Like all of Kirby's eventual partners in Kirby 64: The Crystal Shards, Adeleine is first met on Pop Star doing what she does best - painting a landscape. Right before Kirby enters the scene, a Crystal Shard had interrupted her painting session, and like Waddle Dee before her, she bends down to pick it up, intrigued. Using her easel as a generation point, Dark Matter, noticing the shard, jumps Adeleine and embodies her; at this point, Kirby runs onto the screen, only to see Adeleine painting up various enemies for Kirby to fight. After defeating the final come-to-life painting, which is a scale drawing of Dark Matter itself, the evil forces escape her body, yielding Kirby, Waddle Dee, and Ribbon the Crystal Shard she had been holding. From this point on, Adeleine accompanies the group in finding the remainder of the Crystal Shards hidden across the realm.

Battle

Phase 1

During Phase 1, Adeleine paints a multitude of enemies. These are:

  1. An N-Z
  2. A Bronto Burt
  3. A Mariel
  4. A Mumbies
  5. An unidentifiable pixelated object
  6. The Ice Dragon
  7. Dark Matter's true form.

Upon their defeat, Adeleine enters Phase 2.

Phase 2

During this Phase, Adeleine charges in Kirby's direction while flailing her paintbrush, turning only if she hits a wall. At this point, all Kirby needs to do is to use his Slide Attack and/or Air Bullet on her and she will be defeated.

The wait is over! This clever artist and her fairy companion from Kirby 64: The Crystal Shards are back on Planet Popstar! They may not be the galaxy's most powerful duo, but their perilous paintings and shiny crystals are nothing to scoff at.

— Guest Star Adeline & Ribbon Artful Adventures Pause Screen description in Kirby Star Allies

Adeleine returns in Kirby Star Allies as a Dream Friend added as a part of Wave 2 on July 27th, 2018 alongside Daroach and Dark Meta Knight. She is paired up with Ribbon as Adeleine & Ribbon, and uses her to hover. One of her attacks includes painting a variety of enemies from Kirby's Dream Land 3 and Kirby 64, including Batamon, Ghost Knight, and . She can also charge up this attack to paint Waiu, Kracko, or Ice Dragon and ride upon it. She is able to do her flailing attack from the end of the battle against her as well. She can also use the Shard Gun from the final boss of Kirby 64 while flying in the air with Ribbon. She can also paint scenery on her canvas to hide behind it. She can also use a Friend Ability similar to Still Life, but instead of painting the refrigerator of Ice-Spark Kirby, she paints the Picnic from the bonus stages of Kirby 64.

Moveset

Adeleine & Ribbon has the lowest health of all playable characters in Kirby Star Allies. In addition, Adeleine is tall and thus considered a big character, i.e. easier to get hit. However, Ice Dragon and Kracko from Ado's Painter can deal massive damage, making Adeleine & Ribbon one of the fastest characters to beat The Ultimate Choice solo.

A couple of the character interactions in the main menu of Kirby Star Allies has Adeleine either hiding from or trying to attack Gooey. Presumably, this is because she is mistaking Gooey for Dark Matter, who had possessed her in Kirby 64.

According to the January 2019 issue of Nintendo DREAM, the developers had originally considered giving Adeleine a voice, but ultimately decided against the idea, as they felt "it wasn't the right time for that" and wanted to avoid her feeling like a different character.[2]

Super Kirby Clash

Adeleine and Ribbon appear in the Castle Village after clearing the Toughest: Pres. Parallel Susie Story Quest. Here, the former is painting as the latter watches.

Trivia

  • In the Japanese media, Adeleine calls Kirby by the nickname カーくん (Kā-kun).[3]
  • Adeleine sees King Dedede as a brother.[4] In the Japanese media, she calls him デデのだんな (Master/Mister/Sir Dede).
  • Adeleine is a little shy about being fed items, so she hides her face a little while doing Face-to-Face.[4]
  • In the Chinese version of Kirby Star Allies, the button execution of Painter and Ado's Painter was incorrectly shown as ↑ + B until this error was fixed in Version 4.0.0.
  • Adeleine slightly resembles Satsuki Kusakabe from the Studio Ghibli movie My Neighbor Totoro in body proportions and hair color, but their color scheme and interests are different.

(For the voices of the Dream Friends, we put as much emphasis as possible on recreating the originals. We considered candidates for Adeleine's voice actor, and we could have handled it by selecting a staff member with good voice acting skills, but... we thought it wasn't the right time for that. Since this character is returning from a long absence, we wanted to reduce the element of her feeling like a "different girl".)
