Stone is a Copy Ability that debuted in Kirby's Adventure and is primarily obtained by absorbing a stone type enemy or even rocks from a boss. It allows Kirby to perform one of several stone-based attacks, which vary from game to game, but usually involve Kirby's transforming either into a stone version of himself or a random statue or other heavy object. Kirby can also obtain the Stone ability through Copy Pedestals or Copy Essence Deluxes.

Game Appearances

Kirby's Adventure / Kirby: Nightmare in Dream Land

Stone made its debut along with the concept of Copy Abilities themselves in Kirby's Adventure. This game established Stone as an ability that caused Kirby to transform into a rock, and plummet downward, becoming all but invulnerable and dealing damage on impact, as well as sliding on slopes. Kirby only has one form here, that being a pink-ish rock with a level bottom and two closed eyes on it.

Kirby's Dream Land 2

Stone returned as an ability in Kirby's Dream Land 2, where it functioned as before. However, its function would vary somewhat when used along with the animal friends.

In Kirby Super Star and Kirby Super Star Ultra, Stone can be obtained from Rockys and the boulders appearing during the battle against Fatty Whale and Wham Bam Rock. Kirby's visual appearance changes by turning brown and wearing a helmet with a tail on top.

Upon using the ability, Kirby randomly turns into one of a wide variety of objects. In the original Kirby Super Star, Kirby can turn into a golden Mario statue, a statue of Samus Aran, a star block, a bronze Kirby statue, a pink rock, an 8 ton weight or a strong man statue; its remake adds a mountain, an iron fist, statues of Rick, Kine and Coo, a Thudd and more. While transformed, Kirby is completely invincible, but cannot move; pressing the B button while in stone form returns Kirby to his usual self.

With the stone ability equipped, Kirby can create a Rocky as a helper, which possesses the same skills as Stone Kirby does.

Kirby's Dream Land 3

Stone appears again in Kirby's Dream Land 3, where it functioned much like in Dream Land 2. The inclusion of more animal friends gave more possibilities for combinations.

Super Smash Bros. (series)

In all of the installments of Super Smash Bros., Kirby's down special is the Stone Ability, and behaves exactly as it does in Kirby's Adventure. Starting with Melee, Kirby transforms into various objects, including a Star Block, a Thwomp from the Mario universe, and other things. Unlike in the main-line Kirby games, however, Kirby can be grabbed while in Stone form, and may still be harmed if he is hit by a powerful enough attack.

Kirby 64: The Crystal Shards

Stone appeared in Kirby 64: The Crystal Shards, where it took on a slightly different form. Here, instead of simply becoming a stone and falling, Kirby would turn into a rounded boulder, fall to the ground, then morph into a stone version of himself and start walking around. In this form, he was invulnerable, but could not jump, and would roll automatically down hills. Stone could additionally be combined with other abilities or itself to produce varying results.

Kirby & the Amazing Mirror

Stone appears as an ability in Kirby & the Amazing Mirror, behaving much the same as it did in Super Star.

Kirby's Return to Dream Land

After a relatively long absence, Stone returns in Kirby's Return to Dream Land, where it can be obtained from Rocky and the Mid-Boss Moundo and has gained new moves that allow for it to be used in a more varied manner. Apart from the traditional power to turn to stone and slide down hills, Kirby may now transform into a bigger-than-normal statue and slam onto the ground with great force, as well as use a powerful low-range uppercut attack that knocks enemies into the air. The latter is also the first Stone move in the history of the series that does not transform Kirby's entire body.

Possible transformations resulting from using Stone in this game include a rock, a brick with a star on it, a Kirby statue, an 8 ton weight, two different human-shaped statues, a sculpture of Kirby's three original Animal Friends, a fist, a volcano, Marx on his circus ball and Kirby Super Star Ultra's design of Wham Bam Rock. Some lesser known transformations include the Dragoon from Kirby's Air Ride, a gold statue of the power-ups Star Rod, Triple Star, and the Power Paintbrush, a gold statue of the Kirby from Kirby & the Amazing Mirror and a gold statue of Meta Knight and Galacta Knight.

Move Button Execution Description
Stone Change (1) Kirby transforms into a random, invincible statue that is stationary on the ground, or immediately plummets when used in the air. Ending this effect causes rock shards to fly away, which can harm enemies.
Stone Smash (1) in air Kirby transforms into a random statue and falls straight down, pounding stakes into the ground and dealing damage to enemies he collides with.
Turbo Stone Dash + (1) Changes into stone out of a dash, leaving some momentum for Kirby to slide into his opponents on the ground.
Heavy Smash Down + (1) in air Kirby transforms into a larger statue and pauses in the air for a bit before slamming straight down with greater force. Using this directly above an enemy causes Kirby to deal additional damage while transforming.
Stone Uppercut Up + (1) Kirby performs an uppercut directly in front of him with a fist made of stone, dealing damage and catapulting enemies into the air.
Slope Slide (1) on slope Kirby will slide down slopes while in Stone form, which will damage any enemies he slides into.

Kirby: Triple Deluxe

Stone returns in Kirby: Triple Deluxe, bearing the same characteristics it had in Return to Dream Land. However, two notable changes were made. Firstly, Stone Uppercut was changed so that it can be charged to deal more damage. Secondly, if Kirby tries to dash while in Stone form, he will pivot in that form slightly. This can be done to change the angle from which the unknown reader can see the stone sculpture that Kirby changes into. This technique deals no damage, and is only there for cosmetic purposes.

Also some changes were made to the forms that Kirby can take. Notable additions include a brick block from the Mario universe, a statue resembling his three companions from Return to Dream Land, and the Kirby Statue now has a different, happier expression. On rare occasions, he may transform into a golden statuette of his likeness from Kirby's Adventure carrying the Star Rod, a marble statue of four mini Kirbys from Kirby Mass Attack, a steel-colTemplate:Oured statue of Kirby with the Ultra Sword, a silver statue of the Lor Starcutter, a statue depicting the Hal Laboratories HQ, a golden statue of Drawcia and Drawcia Soul, a golden statue depicting both Marx and Magolor, and a gold block of the Hal Laboratories logo.

Trivia

  • Kirby: Squeak Squad is one of the few games to not feature Stone in any capacity. Instead, it features an ability called Metal, which behaves somewhat like Stone, but still allows Kirby to move and hover (very slowly).
