On the ground, Rick's the best. He won't slide on ice! Hop on Rick and get cruisin'!
— Kirby's Dream Land 3 Instruction booklet

Rick is a large hamster-like creature and one of Kirby's six Animal Friends, making his first appearance in Kirby's Dream Land 2. He is distinguished by his orange and white fur, his beady eyes and whiskers, and his bulbous frame with two small feet to carry him and additionally Kirby when the two are paired up with each-other. Pairing up Rick with Kirby allows for a number of different methods of attack based on what Copy Ability the pink puffball has at a certain time, though these vary heavily in effectiveness.

Rick makes his most prominent appearances in Kirby's Dream Land 2, Kirby's Dream Land 3, and Kirby Star Allies, where he is a playable character (though always paired up with either Kirby, Gooey, or another Animal Friend). He has appeared in a large number of other games as well, though he rarely makes more than a cameo appearance, and is seldom seen in isolation from Kine and Coo. Rick also has a supporting role in the anime series Kirby: Right Back at Ya!, where he has the ability to speak in full sentences and lives with other intelligent animals in a big oak tree in an ancient woodland.

Characteristics

Rick's appearance is that of a large and bulbous bipedal hamster with relatively short arms and stubby pink feet similar to those of Kirby. Despite his rounded features, however, he does have a distinct head and body, unlike the pink puffball who rides on his back. Rick's fur is largely white, with prominent orange splotches covering the top of his head and on his back. His face consists of two small beady eyes spread far apart, with a small snout between them tipped by a pink triangular nose and a set of whiskers, and two small pointed ears on top of his head. He has a small rounded tail which is not always visible due to his bulbous shape.

Rick's forte is his speed and versatility on the ground, being able to walk on icy surfaces with better traction compared to other characters, and being able to jump off the heads of enemies to gain additional height, partially making up for his inability to hover or jump in midair. His swimming speed is also fairly slow. Last but not least in his movement kit is the ability to climb walls, which he does with great effectiveness in stages such as Cloudy Park - Stage 5 in Kirby's Dream Land 3. Unlike the other Animal Friends, Rick will eat enemies directly when paired up with Kirby or Gooey, though he can only inhale in Kirby's Dream Land 2.

Rick can be considered to be the most prominent of Kirby's six Animal Friends, since he is always the first to be introduced, and is usually the one that Kirby pairs up with in artwork and in-game cutscenes. He has also shown up in cameo appearances more often than his two main counterparts Kine and Coo. Like the other Animal Friends, Rick is always angling to get Kirby to travel with him, and can be seen sobbing when Kirby picks someone else as a companion. Rick also has a tendency to occasionally bully both Kine and Coo, particularly in the time-out cutscenes in the Round Clear mode of Kirby's Star Stacker for Game Boy.

Rick makes his debut appearance as an Animal Friend in Kirby's Dream Land 2. He is the first friend Kirby meets on his adventure, appearing in the second stage of Grass Land as well as in the level's intro.

When traveling together with Rick, Kirby rides on his back. Teaming up with the hamster enables him to walk a little bit faster and prevents him from slipping on ice, but makes him unable to fly, which can make certain locations impossible to escape from without leaving the friend behind. Additionally, Rick can inhale, swallow, and spit out enemies like Kirby.

Like the other Animal Friends, teaming up with Rick while possessing a Copy Ability grants Kirby access to new skills, which combine Rick's powers with the attributes of Kirby's ability. When Rick is with Kirby, his theme music also plays.

Kirby's Toy Box

In the Star Breaker mini-game of Kirby's Toy Box, which is similar to Kirby's Block Ball, two Ricks appear in place of a paddle. Together they hold a trampoline for Kirby to bounce off, and therefore are the characters controlled by the player. When a stage is cleared (or idle) they look at the screen, and if Game Over is reached, one is seen nose bumping the other on the head.

In the Cannonball mini-game, players operate large mechanical robots which resemble Rick.

Kirby's Star Stacker

KSSGB Normal clear illustration.png
Rick and Kirby having a picnic in Kirby's Star Stacker.

Rick returns in Kirby's Star Stacker for Game Boy, alongside the other two friends Kine and Coo. Just like the other animals, he appears as one of the three types of Friend Blocks essential for destroying the various other kinds of blocks. As such, it acts identically to the other two Friend Blocks but requires other Rick blocks for a reaction to take place.

Apart from being an integral gameplay element, the hamster is also seen in the various "time out" cutscenes between rounds, where he can often be seen toying with the other two friends, as well as in several of the pictures unlocked by completing certain modes. Finishing Normal mode shows him and Kirby having a picnic in a woodland, and he is seen together with the other Animal Friends in the pictures awarded for completing Super Hard and Insane!.

Rick also shows up in the Super Famicom remake of Kirby's Star Stacker, where he appears in the story mode cutscenes and has the same role as a Friend Block in gameplay.

Kirby's Dream Land 3

Artwork of Rick from Kirby's Dream Land 3

Rick returns as a friend for Kirby to team up with in Kirby's Dream Land 3, alongside the other Animal Friends from the game's predecessor. Although his design remains mostly the same, the spots of his fur have become brighter, particularly in his in-game sprites, where they are almost yellow. He appears together with Nago in the first stage of Grass Land, and can once again be seen in the intro of the level.

Although Rick still does not slip on ice like in the previous game, his other powers have changed greatly; the hamster is now able to wall-jump, allowing him to climb walls that would otherwise not be passable, but is considerably slower and has lost the ability to inhale. Instead, Rick opens his mouth while the Y button is held and is able to eat enemies he walks into. Once an opponent is in his mouth, however, he can spit it out or swallow it as if he had inhaled it. The Propeller enemy moves faster in his presence if it possesses a yellow coloring.

Just like other Animal Friends, the hamster once again grants Kirby access to different skills if the pink hero possesses a Copy Ability, although a few of these combinations differ slightly from those of the previous game.

While the Y button is held, small snowballs appear above Kirby, which can freeze enemies. Rick cannot move while using this power, although he slides a bit if he is already in motion while activating it. It acts similarly to the Freeze ability, though somewhat less so than its previous appearance.

Kirby 64: The Crystal Shards

K64Rick.png
The Rick statue from Kirby 64: The Crystal Shards.

Although Rick does not appear in person in Kirby 64: The Crystal Shards, he makes a cameo as one of the statues Kirby can turn into by using the Stone-Cutter Power Combo. As the Rick sculpture, Kirby can walk slowly and make small jumps, as well as jump off walls like Rick can in Kirby's Dream Land 3. As with the other results of Stone-Cutter, Kirby is invincible in this form and may end the transformation at any time by pushing the ability button again, causing the statue to crumble and harm nearby enemies with its debris.

Kirby: Canvas Curse

In Kirby: Canvas Curse, Rick makes a minor appearance as a painting created by Paint Roller in the sub-game Paint Panic.

Kirby Super Star Ultra

KSSU Stone Rick sprite.png

Rick makes another indirect cameo in Kirby Super Star Ultra, an enhanced remake of Kirby Super Star, where a statue of him is one of the objects Kirby can turn into by using the Stone ability. It should be noted that this statue does not appear in the original game, instead being exclusive to the remake.

Rick also cameos in the sub-game Kirby Card Swipe alongside the other Animal Friends.

Kirby Mass Attack

In Kirby Mass Attack, Rick appears in the sub-game Kirby Quest, where he can be seen alongside Kine and Coo in the "game over" screen.

Kirby's Return to Dream Land / Kirby's Return to Dream Land Deluxe

The sculpture from Kirby's Return to Dream Land that depicts Rick along with Kine and Coo.

In Kirby's Return to Dream Land, Rick cameos once more as a random Stone transformation. Instead of being given his own separate statue, however, he is part of a sculpture consisting of all of Kirby's original Animal Friends (Rick, Kine, and Coo). This result differs from other results of using the Stone ability only in appearance and size.

In Kirby's Return to Dream Land Deluxe, the Animal Friends statue from the original is replaced by the one from Kirby Star Allies, depicting Rick, Kine, and Coo in a Protective Bag. There is also a Dress-Up Mask based on Rick, unlocked upon visiting Merry Magoland for the first time, and a gold statue of Rick, Kine, and Coo appears in Merry Magoland after completing 10 missions, which seems to reuse the same pose of the original Animal Friends Stone transformation from Kirby's Return to Dream Land. Rick also makes a brief appearance in an image shown near the end of the staff credits in Magolor Epilogue: The Interdimensional Traveler, in which he can be seen in the Dream Kingdom along with Kine, Coo, Magolor, Bandana Waddle Dee, and Broom Hatter.

Kirby's Dream Collection Special Edition

In Kirby's Dream Collection Special Edition, Rick makes a number of appearances: naturally this includes his roles in the games featured in the collection, but he also appears in places in the Kirby's History hallway, and has a few appearances in the Kirby's 20th Anniversary Celebration Book as well.

Kirby: Triple Deluxe

Rick appears as a stage hazard on the Coo's Forest stage of the Kirby Fighters sub-game in Kirby: Triple Deluxe. In this appearance, Rick walks out of one of the doorways and breathes fire in a cone in front of him which deals 32 damage to fighters. Colliding with Rick does 16 damage to the fighters like with other Animal Friends that appear on the stage.

Rick also appears in two keychains. The first depicts him with Kirby in Kirby's Dream Land 2, and the other shows him and Kirby performing the combination Parasol attack in Kirby's Dream Land 3.

Lastly, the Stone sculpture featuring Rick from Kirby's Return to Dream Land returns in this game.

Kirby Fighters Deluxe / Kirby Fighters 2

As with the original Sub-Game, Rick cameos in Kirby Fighters Deluxe and Kirby Fighters 2, serving as a stage hazard in Coo's Forest.

Kirby and the Rainbow Curse

Rick does not appear directly in Kirby and the Rainbow Curse. However, whenever Elline transforms Kirby into the Kirby Tank, she briefly sculpts him to resemble Rick before finishing the transformation. This is a reference to Rick's primary focus on ground-based maneuvering. Rick is also illustrated in the Secret Diary, along with Kine and Coo.

Kirby: Planet Robobot

Rick makes an appearance on two stickers in Kirby: Planet Robobot. One is based on artwork of him from Kirby's Dream Land 2, and the other is artwork of his Friend Block from Kirby's Star Stacker on Game Boy.

Additionally, the Stone sculpture featuring Rick from Kirby: Triple Deluxe returns in this game.

Team Kirby Clash Deluxe / Super Kirby Clash

Rick cameos in Team Kirby Clash Deluxe, appearing in the background in the Village, sitting on a bench. He appears there after clearing the ordeal against Taranza for the first time.

In Super Kirby Clash, Rick appears again, this time in the background of the Port Village after clearing the first Parallel Nightmare Story Quest. He is also depicted alongside Kine and Coo as a sticker.

Kirby Battle Royale

Rick can be seen in the audience in the Slam Hockey battle mode in Kirby Battle Royale, but only appears in the Normal Arena.

Kirby Star Allies

Main article: Rick & Kine & Coo

Rick appears as a Dream Friend in Kirby Star Allies, being tied with Kine and Coo into a single playable character. Rick is the one on-screen most of the time, performing all ground-based attacks and being in the forefront when using objects or participating in Friend Abilities. Rick can use his Stomp to bounce off of enemies while damaging them, can breathe fire (which provides the Sizzle Power Effect), and can roll up into a stone ball. While in stone form, Rick can participate in Curling, Geokinesis, and Rock Painter.

Rick also appears in two of the Celebration Pictures, namely "A Dream Above the Clouds" and "Crazy Mischief in the Stars".

Lastly, Rick appears alongside Kine and Coo in one of Kirby or Rocky's Stone transformations, contained inside a Protective Bag. This particular form is always the result when Rock Painter is used on Rick & Kine & Coo.

Kirby's Dream Buffet

Rick does not appear directly in Kirby's Dream Buffet. However, Kirby can dress up like him using the appropriate color and costume. In addition, Rick appears on several Character Treats.

Super Smash Bros. series

Super Smash Bros. Melee

In Super Smash Bros. Melee, Rick appears as a randomly-obtained trophy.

Super Smash Bros. Ultimate

Rick appears as a ★★ support spirit in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, using his artwork from Kirby's Dream Land 3. He supplies the "Stats ↑ after Eating" bonus and takes up one slot. He can be purchased from the vault shop for 1000G or via battling on the Spirit Board or in the Adventure Mode: World of Light. In the spirit battle, the player is pitted against a yellow Kirby and Pikachu, the latter of whom represents Rick.

Rick is a recurring character in the anime series Kirby: Right Back at Ya!. He is an intelligent animal native to Dream Land who is capable of talking to the residents of Cappy Town. He often takes interests in the affairs of the children, and will sometimes try to defend them. He has no special relationship with Kirby, but will still help the pink puffball when he can. Rick lives with many other animals in the Eastern Forest, taking shelter in the gnarls of Acore.

In the English 4Kids dub, Rick is portrayed with a strong Australian accent, and the sound of didgeridoos can sometimes be heard when he is in a scene. In the Japanese version, he is voiced by Makiko Ohmoto, the same actress who voices Kirby.

Bright and friendly. Skilled at fighting on land.
— Unofficial translation of Rick's description from Kirby: Save the Rainbow Islands!

In the Kirby novel series, Rick appears as a deuteragonist in Kirby: Save the Rainbow Islands! together with Coo and Kine. He is a resident of the Rainbow Islands and one of Kirby's Animal Friends. Similarly to his game Stone transformation specifically, his main attack method consists in rolling into a rock and tackling an opponent.

In Kirby: Save the Rainbow Islands!, he comes to Dream Land with Coo and Kine to ask Kirby to help find the cause of the drought on the Rainbow Islands. In their search, they find Pirika, who indicates at an intruder in the clouds as the culprit. After receiving a good-luck charm in the form of a pouch from his girlfriend Pick, he sets off to the lake in the sky with the rest.

At the lake, they find their friend Gooey, who dammed up the lake. Gooey attacks Pirika, so they retreat to regroup. After Kine and Kirby fail to enter the water to investigate for the potential mastermind, Pirika urges Rick to go, which he accepts quite reluctantly since he dislikes water. However, he too fails, as he is stopped by Gooey and thrown into a tree, causing him to lose consciousness. Over this time, Pirika is revealed to have been the true mastermind behind the plan and uses the lake's water to control King Dedede and Meta Knight. After Coo wakes him and Kine up, the three fight against their controlled friends, and then subdue them and Pirika in the pouch from Pick.

As they catch a break, Gooey tells his side of the story, explaining that he tried to prevent the contaminated water from pouring down over the Rainbow Islands, and Rick gratefully hugs their savior. Eventually King Dedede and Meta Knight break out of the pouch, so the Animal Friends continue the battle. However, it is cut short after Kirby inhales all the lake water. They find Kirby in great pain, but he recovers almost immediately. They then confront Pirika and have her explain her motives. Kirby, sympathetic after her story, offers to become her friend, and the rest follow queue. Her spell is broken, and the group engages in a friendly game of tag before heading back to the Rainbow Islands to celebrate the return of the rain.
