Meta Knight using Mach Tornado against Kirby in Kirby Super Star Ultra

Mach Tornado is a move used by Meta Knight and similar entities in the Kirby series, having made its debut in Kirby Super Star. Mach Tornado also appears in three Super Smash Bros. games as Meta Knight's neutral special move.

Function[edit]

Mach Tornado is functionally similar to Kirby's Tornado ability. Though the user, target, and specific characteristics of the attack vary depending on the game and series, Mach Tornado generally involves Meta Knight momentarily transforming into a yellow tornado and chasing Kirby, dealing damage if touched. It should not be confused with some of Meta Knight's other moves wherein he summons tornadoes but does not himself become one.

Kirby series[edit]

Kirby Super Star[edit]

Mach Tornado debuts in Kirby Super Star as one of Meta Knight's attacks, used during his boss fight in Chapter 7 of the Revenge of Meta Knight main game. Here, Meta Knight will leap into the air before turning into a fast-moving tornado and moving in a wave pattern toward the ground. If Kirby makes contact with the tornado, he will be launched into the air and lose a significant amount of health upon hitting the ground.

Kirby Super Star Ultra[edit]

Mach Tornado reappears in Kirby Super Star Ultra, this time able to be used by the player in the Meta Knightmare Ultra Extra Game. It is Meta Knight's most costly attack, requiring 30 energy points (out of a maximum of 50) to perform. With this move, Meta Knight will momentarily freeze time, move to the center of the screen and summon two tornadoes that wipe out a screen of enemies and deal significant damage to bosses.

Kirby Mass Attack[edit]

In Stage 5 of the Kirby Mass Attack Sub-Game Strato Patrol EOS, Meta Knight uses Mach Tornado to follow the Kirbys around the screen for a few seconds before reverting to his normal form.

Kirby's Return to Dream Land / Kirby's Return to Dream Land Deluxe[edit]

Galacta Knight can use this attack during the battle against him in The True Arena of Kirby's Return to Dream Land / Kirby's Return to Dream Land Deluxe, functioning much like it did in Kirby Super Star.

Kirby: Triple Deluxe[edit]

In Kirby: Triple Deluxe, the attack can be used by Dark Meta Knight's Revenge. It begins with Dark Meta Knight transforming into a tornado and flying towards King Dedede or Kirby from the background, leaving two Dropped Stars as he passes. He then floats to the ground in a wave pattern much like how the attack works in Kirby Super Star.

Kirby: Planet Robobot[edit]

In Kirby: Planet Robobot, Mecha Knight, Mecha Knight+ and Stock Mecha Knight use the Spark Tornado Attack, which is identical in function to the attack in Kirby: Triple Deluxe.

Mach Tornado is also part of Meta Knight's moveset in the Meta Knightmare Returns Extra Mode, activated and functioning in the same manner as Sword Kirby's Twister Slash attack.

Galacta Knight Returns can also use Mach Tornado, though this one behaves much like it did in Kirby Super Star.

Kirby Star Allies[edit]

Meta Knight can use Mach Tornado as a part of his Dream Friend moveset in Kirby Star Allies, again activated and functioning the same way as in Kirby: Planet Robobot. Dark Meta Knight's Dark Calibur gains the ability to transform into a tornado and move horizontally if he has the Bluster Sword.

Super Kirby Clash[edit]

Across all four Quests where he is fought in Super Kirby Clash, Aeon Hero can also use Mach Tornado. For his two regular battles, it functions much like in Kirby Super Star. When fighting his Light and Dark forms specifically, there's a possibility he may charge up for a few seconds before starting the wave pattern. Then when he gets close to the ground, he immediately rises back up off-screen before landing in the center of the arena, spawning multiple giant tornadoes as he lands.

Super Smash Bros. series[edit]

SmashWiki has more information about this subject here.

In all three Super Smash Bros. games featuring Meta Knight as a playable character, he is able to use Mach Tornado as his neutral special move.

Super Smash Bros. Brawl[edit]

In Super Smash Bros. Brawl, Mach Tornado allows Meta Knight to move around horizontally and even gain some height while in tornado form. This attack causes nearby opponents to be pulled in; if they are ensnared by the tornado, Meta Knight will deliver a series of damaging slashes, the last of which causing significant knockback.

Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS / Wii U[edit]

In Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS / Wii U, Mach Tornado's mobility and duration is drastically limited while its knockback is bolstered.

Super Smash Bros. Ultimate[edit]

In Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, Mach Tornado has even more knockback at the expense of now being a single-hit attack. Meta Knight's capability for horizontal movement while using this attack is also increased.
