Kirby Mass Attack (known in Japan as あつめて！カービィ (Atsumete! Kābī), lit. "Assemble! Kirby") is a Nintendo DS game. Nintendo first revealed a few seconds of it at 03:00 in a DS promotional video. The game was further revealed in Nintendo Power Magazine May 2011 issue, revealing the name.

Plot

In the game, Kirby is on a chain of islands called Popopo Islands. A villain known as Necrodeus zaps Kirby as he is taking a nap, causing him to split him into ten weaker Kirbys that he can destroy one by one. But one Kirby manages to survive unharmed and finds the hero's heart that popped out of him when he was split. Kirby and the hero's heart go on a quest to stop Necrodeus from covering Dream Land with darkness, and to restore Kirby to his normal self. After clearing Green Grounds , all of the Kirbys attempt to go to the next island, but all but one are pulled off of the star by the Skull Gang. Once the unknown reader has cleared all the islands, Daroach tells the Kirbys that to access Necro Nebula, they need all of the Rainbow Medals. Once all of the medals are collected, they create a beam of light that clears the clouds around Necro Nebula, allowing the Kirbys to go there. When the Kirbys reach the staff needed to make them whole again, Necrodeus appears and swallows the staff, leading to the final fight. Once Necrodeus is defeated, the hero's heart tells the Kirbys to grab the staff, and the Kirbys become one Kirby once again, and a Warp Star appears and takes Kirby home.

Gameplay

Due to being split into ten by the game's villain, Kirby has again lost the ability to inhale or float, as he had in Kirby Canvas Curse and Kirby's Epic Yarn. Instead, players can use the DS stylus to control up to ten Kirbys at once to use their combined strength to gang up on foes, solve puzzles, and fight bosses. Tapping a target will make Kirbys interact with it, quickly sliding the stylus towards a target will toss one Kirby at it, and touching and holding will make all Kirbys try to latch onto the Hero's heart and use it to fly around. the unknown reader can add more Kirbys to the group by making the existing one(s) eat fruit to fill up a gauge on the top screen. If a Kirby takes damage, it will usually turn blue, although some sources of damage have different effects. If it takes more damage, it will turn into an angel and leave the group. It can, however, be revived and restored to its blue state by making a non-angel Kirby catch it before it floats away.

The game like several other Kirby games is a side-scroller. The object of each level is to get to the end while collecting the hidden medals and earn achievements. At the end of the level the unknown reader is given a star rating of nothing, bronze, silver or gold, depending on how many Kirbys survived without taking damage. Although many levels appear optional, they can contain Rainbow Medals, which are required to access the final world. Both types of medal are used to unlock extras.

Trivia

• The way the Mini-Kirbys attack enemies and work together to pull down obstacles bears a striking resemblance to how Pikmin operate.
• Often when performing actions, or when entering doors, the mini-Kirbys shout 'Poyo', which was a word Kirby often repeated in place of actual speech in the anime, Kirby: Right Back At Ya!. Mass Attack is the only Kirby game where this happens.
• This is the only game in the series where Kirby can drown underwater.
