In the opening cutscenes, an alien spaceship, the Lor Starcutter comes through a star-shaped portal in the sky on Pop Star, while Kirby is being chased by King Dedede and a Waddle Dee with a blue bandanna while carrying a slice of cake, and while Meta Knight is reading. The spaceship suddenly breaks apart and soon crashes there, and five of its main components fall out of the ship and become scattered throughout the five corners of Pop Star, as well as its 120 Energy Spheres. Upon entering the apparently intact hull of the ship, Kirby, Waddle Dee, King Dedede, and Meta Knight find the owner of the ship, an alien called Magolor. Magolor wishes the missing parts, as well as the Energy Spheres, to be retrieved and returned to the ship. Kirby must retrieve the ship's parts to help the alien Magolor return to its home planet. Kirby eventually goes around Pop Star to retrieve the five missing components: the oars, right wing, the left wing, the banner, and the mast.

Once all the parts are found, the Lor Starcutter is able to fly back and return to Magolor's homeworld, Halcandra. Once the ship arrives there, it crashes after being shot down by Landia, a group of four small red dragons with a crown. Magolor tells Kirby, Waddle Dee, King Dedede, and Meta Knight to defeat Landia. After the crew defeats Landia, Magolor reveals his real intention: to control the universe with Landia's crown, the Master Crown, starting with Pop Star. He flies away into Another Dimension, intent usurping Pop Star. Kirby and the others catch up to him on the four smaller Landias, then fight a now evil, darker Lor Starcutter. Magolor eventually flies away to the final boss arena. Kirby gets there and defeats Magolor, and later Magolor Soul. The Lor Starcutter, once again a good character, and Landia help Kirby, Meta Knight, King Dedede, and Waddle Dee escape the disintegrating realm of Another Dimension. Kirby and the others find themselves on the ground nearly just waking up in Dream Land. After recovering, they see Landia and Lor Starcutter wave good-bye as they fly away into another dimension. Finally, they rejoice and go on with their regular lives.

Gameplay

Gameplay returns to that of classic Kirby adventures, in that it is a side-scrolling platform game. Kirby can do all his standard moves, such as run, jump, puff up, inhale, and swim. By inhaling, Kirby is once again able to copy from his opponents' abilities to be used, losing an ability when requested or when sufficient damage is received. Kirby may also obtain a Copy Ability by using Copy Pedestals found in some parts of the stages, especially before certain boss battles. There are four new abilities added to Kirby's Return to Dream Land, along with several returning standard abilities. The health bar returns as usual, and food is used to replenish the health bar (the Maxim Tomato replenishing the entirety of it). There are also several items that need to be used in some stages, such as a cannon, a protective umbrella, or a boot. Keys are sometimes put in the stage (sometimes on a shining Waddle Dee called a CarryDee) to unlock doors to certain areas, especially areas with Energy Spheres. Typical features, such as Bomb Blocks are also included. Some blocks can be bypassed only with Kirby's Super Inhale, which allows him to swallow a large amount of blocks and enemies (including other players) and spit out a large star, often to help clear his way. Some areas and bonuses require Kirby to have a certain ability, notably parts where Kirby must cut a rope holding a platform with a sword/cutter/spear/ninja blade, fuses that must be lit by Fire, or stumps/blocks that can only be broken by a rock or a hammer. Some areas must be opened up with the use of buttons, like in previous Kirby games. There are also now little switches on the ceiling that Kirby must stick to in order to open up certain areas, or activate certain block patterns. If Kirby dies with lives left, Kirby returns to the output of the most recent door entered. If Kirby runs out of lives entirely, he must start the stage over again, should the unknown reader decide to continue the game (except for final boss battles). Kirby can also obtain stars; if 100 stars are obtained, a life is given to Kirby. Yellow Stars are worth one star, Red stars are worth ten, and Blue stars are worth thirty. At the end of each stage, Kirby enters what is called a "goal game", where Kirby falls on a slingshot, which will fire him up to 7 levels, level 1 being the highest depending on the unknown reader's timing; attaining a higher level gives him a star bonus. If the "goal game" is played in multiplayer, and other characters attain the same level as Kirby or each other, a "Team Bonus" is added.

In addition to the standard abilities, a new type of ability, the Super Ability, has been introduced on some stages. Super Abilities are greatly enhanced versions of standard copy abilities, and is required to break large objects that are too formidable to be broken by a normal ability. Super Abilities also have a time limit attached to them, and if Kirby manages to break a final obstacle within the allotted time constraint, Kirby will be able to enter a rift into another dimension, where he must complete a moving stage, then defeat a Sphere Doomer to obtain two additional Energy Spheres.

The game is played on seven main levels, five on Pop Star and two on Halcandra. Within these levels are a number of stages that the unknown reader must complete, including the boss level at the end, and some mid-bosses in the middle. Each stage contains several doors to help traverse through the level, as well as a few side doors (marked by a orange star on top of the door) which may lead to a bonus such as a 1UP or an Energy Sphere. Each non-boss level contains three to five Energy Sphere that are usually well hidden; sometimes they require that Kirby fights against a Sphere Doomer or that Kirby obtain a certain Copy Ability, sometimes from a mid-boss. Energy Spheres can be used to unlock challenges, games, and copy ability rooms in the Lor Starcutter. Each boss battle at the end of a level leads unlocks the next level, and for the levels in Pop Star, yields a spaceship part for the Lor Starcutter.

The final three boss battles occur in Another Dimension, and are immediately subsequent to each other. Should Kirby die on one of those battles, he only has to re-complete the battle that he just died in, even after game over.

The game also supports up to 4 players, playing as Kirby, Meta Knight, King Dedede, and Waddle Dee,[1] each with their own weapons and their own unique feel.[2] Meta Knight has controls nearly identical to sword Kirby an flies in a fashion similar to Wing Kirby, King Dedede has controls nearly identical to Hammer Kirby, and Blue Bandanna Waddle Dee has controls nearly identical to Spear Kirby. Non-Kirby players may not inhale or switch abilities. It is also possible for each player to instead control a Kirby of a different colTemplate:Our (yellow for player 2, blue for 3, green for 4). Each additional Kirby may inhale, copy, and receive controls identical to the primary pink Kirby. Each entry of another player consumes one life. An extra player may exit at any time, however, a life will only be restored if the player leaving still has full health on their character. If an extra player dies, the game continues as usual and the extra player(s) may re-enter the game given that there are lives remaining, however, if the primary Kirby dies, the game must be restarted at the nearest door output. Extra characters will automatically warp to Kirby should the extra character's position deviate a great distance from the primary Kirby, or the Primary Kirby enters a cannon. Either character may enter doors, or launch cannons.

There are several rooms in the Lor Starcutter, some of them challenges, where Kirby must complete certain tasks with a certain ability or items, earning points for getting coins (100 for silver, 1000 for gold), and defeating enemies (50 each), and losing points for taking damage (-500 each hit). A certain amount of points gives Kirby a Bronze, Silver, or Gold medal depending on the number of points received. Copy ability rooms are rooms with 5 standard Copy Pedestals each, where Kirby can test out abilities on a bean bag. The mini-games include Ninja Dojo and Scope Shot. Ninja Dojo is a game where players must throw blades at targets with good timing, and Scope Shot is a game where the unknown reader (along with other players if applicable) must shoot down a mechanTemplate:Sed enemy using a gun.

After Kirby has completed the final boss battle, an extra mode is unlocked, where Kirby is smaller, has less health, and the boss battles are more difficult and all boss names are marked with (EX). In addition all stars become hollowed out, and 1ups have a crown on them. In addition an Arena similar to the one in Kirby Super Star is unlocked where Kirby must complete all boss battles with one life, with limited numbers of Maxim Tomatoes and Food, as well as a limited choice of Copy Abilities after the first battle. A True Arena is unlocked after Extra mode is completed. An arena can be played with any character if the unknown reader has completed the arena once through.

Super Abilities

All super abilities hold a time limit on how long they can be used. They are typically very powerful, and using it to destroy a final obstacle is often required to access an alternate dimension where Kirby can obtain two additional Energy Spheres from a Sphere Doomer.

Reception

Kirby's Return to Dream Land received generally good reviews. Destructoid gave the game a perfect 10/10, praising everything except for the soundtrack, saying it wasn't as memorable as other games. GameSpot gave was a bit harsher giving it a 7.5/10, lauding it's multiplayer capabilities and its charm but criticizing it's lack of difficulty. IGN gave it a 7.5/10 as well, complimenting gameplay and its lasting appeal but underwhelmed with it's graphics and sounds. Joystiq gave the game 3.5 out of 5 stars, saying that it had a good charm aimed toward the younger audience, but that "the complete lack of difficulty makes what should be an enthralling game sometimes boring."

Trivia

  • This game takes many elements from Kirby Super Star, such as the multiplayer feature, and generally the same storyline as Milky Way Wishes, with Magolor being like Marx, asking for help so that they could each achieve ultimate power, each also having a harder, more powerful form, known as Magolor Soul and Marx Soul, respectively.
    • This similarity is further compounded by one of Kirby's Stone transformations in Kirby: Triple Deluxe, which depicts both Magolor and Marx together as a golden statue.
  • Galacta Knight is a boss in the True Arena.
  • The fight with Galactic NOVA Nucleus is similar to the battle with the Lor Starcutter.
  • The worlds in this game often share themes with worlds in the New Super Mario Bros series in a shared order, with a meadow world at the beginning followed by a desert world then a water world then a ice world then a jungle world then a mechanical world in both cases, before starting to diverge afterwards starting world 7.
  • On October 23, 2015, Satoshi Ishida from HAL Laboratory revealed in a Miiverse post that HAL was considering Kirby's Return to Dream Land to be titled Kirby Wii: Super Friends during development. This combined 'Super' from 'Super Abilities' "with the image of adventuring together", and "'friend' evokes the concept of friendship, which is one the game's main themes".
